The Iguanodon was a dinosaur. He looked something like a giant lizard. In fact, dinosaurs were, giant reptiles (lizards).

The Iguanodon lived upon the earth about 125 mya (million years ago). He lived at a time which is called The age of the Dinosaurs. Scientists call that time the Mesozoic Era which was a time during the Cretaceous Period.

The Iguandon was about 13 foot tall and 30 feet long, he appeared to have a large bulging body, which weighed between 5 and 6 tonnes. He had 16 toes on his greet big feet, 3 toes on each of his back feet, and five toes on each of his front feet, one of which was a sharp spike which stuck out at his wrist. He probably used that to hold onto his meat.

Iguanodon used to stand upright on his strong and muscular back legs. He was a fast runner, and sometimes, he used to run while standing up on his big back legs. Iguanodon was also able to walk upon all four of his legs.

Fossils (bones, teeth, horns and claws) of Iguanodons and also leaves were found in rocks by Geologist's. (people who study rocks). The bones, teeth, horns and claws were put together to build Iguanodon, and from the fossils and the leaves that were found with the fossils, Scientists called Paleaontologists, were able to work out what the Iguanodon looked like, what sort of vegetation was growing at the time of the Iguanodon, what the Iguanodon ate, and where they lived and roamed.

Iguanodon had a beak at the front of his teeth which were strong and flat, he moved his jaw from side to side as he chewed upon the twigs and leaves, which he plucked from plants with his beak. The scientists also worked out that there were no flowers upon the earth during the time of the dinosasurs. There were flowers upon the earth in the time of the Dinosaurs because, all plants have types of flowers from which they produce their seeds.

The Iguanodon's lived in herds in warm tropical climates, where there were hills, valleys, rivers, marshes, and forest of trees.

There were other dinosaurs on the earth at the same time as the Iguanodon, Scientists have called one of those dinosaur types Polacanthus, he was a bout 13 feet long. He was also a herbivore, and he ate the plants that were closest to the ground. He had bony armour along his back, and he had big spikes over his body which protected him from other carnivorous (meat-eating) dinosaurs.

Reptiles lay eggs to produce their young, so, it is believed that Iguanodon mothers laid eggs, which they may have covered with mud and leaves and left to hatch in the warmth of the rotting leaves and the sun.

When the baby Iguanodon's were ready to hatch, they started to pick the insides of the shells with their tiny beaks, whilst at the same time making dinosaur sounds, which brought their Iguanodon mothers running back to their nests.

Iguanodons probably kept there babies in the middle of their herds in order to protect them from marauding and hovering meat eating birds and dinosaurs. There were birds upon the earth in the time of the Dinosaurs.

Where were the fossils of Iguanodon found?
Iguanodon fossils were found in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

There are no Dinosaurs upon the earth now, Dinosaurs are extinct, they started to die out when the moon, which was once a consuming fire burned out.

Iguanodon: Say, ig-waan-o-don.
Polacanthus: Say, pole-ar-can-thus.
