Footprints in rocks, and rocks containing fossils (bones, teeth, horns and claws) of Triceratops, and other animals, and also of plants, were found in North America. The bones, teeth, horns and claws were carefully put together to build a Triceratops. From the foot prints, and the fossils of the dinosaurs and the other animals, and leaves that were found with the fossils, Scientists called Paleaontologists, worked out what Triceratops looked like, what animals were living at the time, what the climate was like, what sort of plants were growing, what the animals ate and where, and how, they lived and roamed.

Triceratops means "three horned face." Triceratops was a dinosaur, he weighed about 6 tonnes, he was about about 30 foot long, and he stood about 16 feet tall. He had four, strong thick boned legs, upon which he walked, a beak upon his mouth which he used to cut off leaves and twigs, a powerful bite, long rows of teeth, three horns upon his head, and a large bony frill, edged with little bones, around the back of his head.

Triceratops lived in herds in valleys at the foot of volcanic mountains and hills in a warm and humid climate on the plains of North America.

Hadrosaurs and Tyrannasaurus Rex (other dinosaurs) were also living in North America at that time.

The Hadrosaur was a herbivore (an animal that lived on plants), he was about 16 foot tall and 33 feet long, while the gigantic Tyrranosuarus Rex was a carnivore (meat eating) dinosaur, and he stood about 20 foot tall, he was about 40 foot long and he weighed around 6 tonnes.

Triceratops like the Hadrosaur was a herbivore (plant eating animal). Some of the plants that were around during the time of the Triceratops were ferns, fir trees, and also pine trees.

Triceratops lived upon the earth about 125 mya (million years ago). He lived at a time which is called The Age of the Dinosaurs. Scientists call that time the Mesozoic Era which was a time during the Cretaceous Period.

When fossils of Tyrannosaurus Rex were found, fossils of smaller creatures and animals were also found, and from these fossils Geologists (people who study rocks) were able to work out what types of animals and creatures were living upon the earth at the time of Tyrannosaurus Rex. There were birds flying through the sky. There were pterosaurs (flying reptiles). There were small mammals who hunted insects.
There were lizards who ate plants small animals, and eggs, there were also snakes who ate small animals and eggs.

Male Triceratops were territorial, they would raise their frills and make loud noises, and batter their heads together as they fought to win the females.

Triceratops laid eggs. They probably laid them in nests lined and covered with mud and the leaves of plants and left them to hatch in the warmth of the rotting vegetation and the sun.

When the babies were ready to hatch they probably made dinosaur sounds as they pecked on the insides of their shells with their little beaks which brought their waiting mothers running back to the nests to protect them.

Tyrannosaurus Rex probably ate baby Triceratops and baby Hadrosaurs. Teeth marks of Tyrannosuarus Rex were found in the bones of Triceratops, so s/he probably got them while stabbing Tyrannosaurus Rex with her horns to get him away from her babies.

Baby Triceratops looked like miniature dinosaurs. When they hatched from their eggs their mothers taught them how to communicate, and how to hide in the bushes and plants from predators like snakes, flying reptiles, and Tyrannosaurus Rex! Mother animals teach their babies, what plants to eat, where to find the plants, and also where to find water. Baby Triceratops probably played with one another, they probably ran all over the place, and crawled all over their mothers when they were resting, they probably rolled and splashed in the mud and water, at the edges of lakes and rivers.

Where was Triceratops found.
Fossils of Triceratops were found in North America. Triceratops lived at the end of the Age of the Dinosaurs, about 65 mya (million years ago).

Dinosaurs were reptiles. Reptiles are cold blooded animals. Dinosaurs are now extinct. The dinosaurs started to die out when the moon which was once a consuming fire burned out.

Frill. The fringed bone at the back of the head of the Triceratops.
Triceratrops. Say, Tri-serr-a-tops.
